Repent Misdeeds. First is to examine the actions you have taken during your whole life that have injured others. Then, regret any negativity you have caused others and resolve to always act positively. The examination of your past includes how you have impacted beings in the visible and invisible worlds. Each day you should examine your thoughts, intentions and actions as they effect others. Correct any errors immediately. If there is some wrong which requires a sincere apology or amendment, set it right quickly. If it cannot be repaired directly, be contrite within. Cultivate Self. The second step is to learn and practice a number of techniques of spiritual cultivation. These practices include prostrations, mantra recitations, meditation techniques and various kinds of Buddhist yoga. The first & second practices together are aimed at improving yourself on all levels. For one such practice, go to the meditation room. Do Good. The third practice is to strive as often as possible to act in the best interests of others with whom we come in contact. We are to perform good deeds for the benefit all living beings, not only humans and animals, but also including the earth itself, even the atmosphere encircling the planet. Our concern for others needs to grow so that we will forget ourselves in the process of caring for others. This practice unites wisdom we have cultivated in spiritual practice with compassion in caring for all beings. |
![]() Transfer Merit: The fourth practice is transferring Buddhas light across time & space to release others from difficult karmic problems of body, heart and mind. Through practicing the foregoing, we will come to gain greater ability to aid beings in all circumstances and in distant places. We will come to know the best way to help others in every varied circumstance. The third and fourth practices emphasize altruism and focus us on caring for the welfare of others without limit. This last practice leads us to teach others how to cultivate the Bodhi heart through the eight word core dharma repenting misdeeds, cultivating Self, doing good and transferring merit. By all our dharma activities we can create positive karma among all beings so they may more easily follow the path to their highest well being. ©2000 Life Torch Bodhi Temple. All Rights Reserved. |
